The Bald Eagle
Considered a threatened species in Québec, the majestic bald eagle, official emblem of the United States, is the largest bird of prey in Canada. One of 59 species of eagles in the world, the Bald Eagle is one of two eagles in North America (the other is the Golden Eagle) and the only exclusively North American eagle.
Its eyesight is three to four times as sharp as that of humans, a great asset for hunting and finding dead animals. Its hearing probably compares to that of humans, but its senses taste and smell are not so well developed.
Most bald eagles reproduce along coastlines and lake shores, where good nesting trees are found.
The Bald Eagle feeds primarily on fish, aquatic birds, and mammals, which it may take alive or find dead. Much of its live prey, especially the waterfowl, consists of sickly individuals or those wounded by hunters. (Source: Faune et flore du pays)
